PhysCon logoHappy New Year from SPS! SPS Wishes Everyone a Happy New Year. 2016 promises to be a busy year with many zone meetings already planned and the 2016 Quadrennial Physics Congress (PhysCon) set for Nov. 3-5 in Silicon Valley, CA.

SPS National Council Nominations are Open The SPS National Council is the main governing body for the Society of Physics Students and Sigma Pi Sigma. The Council is composed of an elected faculty zone councilor (ZC) and an elected student associate zone councilor (AZC) from each of the 18 zones, and an elected council president and Sigma Pi Sigma president.

Nominations for SPS Zone Councilors for Zones 2, 5, 6, 7, 12, and 17 (three-year terms); Associate Zone Councilors for all 18 Zones (one-year terms); and the office of Sigma Pi Sigma President (two-year term) are now being accepted. Submit nominations now!

SPS Internships — Deadline February 1! Looking for a fun and rewarding summer experience? SPS Internship position descriptions are available online. Applications are due Feb. 1, 2016!

Nuclear Science Summer School Michigan State University will be hosting the 1st Nuclear Science Summer School (NS3). NS3 is a summer school for undergraduate students that aims to introduce the participants to the field of nuclear science. NS3 will offer lectures and hands-on activities covering selected nuclear science topics and providing an overview of the field. The school activities will take place at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) and will include lectures by local and visiting researchers, nuclear physics labs, a tour of the facility, discussions with graduate students and faculty, and social events. NS3 will take place on May 16-21st, 2016 on the campus of Michigan State University. Participation to the school is funded by the National Science Foundation and NSCL. Local expenses and limited travel support will be covered by the school. The deadline for applications is February 15, 2016.
It has been my pleasure to serve as SPS Director. As I prepare to return to academia this spring, I am happy to announce that Daniel Golombek will be Acting Director of SPS starting January 18.
