Dear SPS member,

We are looking for a few good students and mentors to run for the SPS National Council!

SPS is, at its core, a student organization and we need leaders to direct the mission and goals of the organization through the SPS National Council. As you may know, SPS divides its membership into 18 different zones. Each zone elects a student Associate Zone Councilor (AZC) and a faculty Zone Councilor (ZC). Together the AZC and ZC work with all SPS members and chapters within their zone to make a difference in the lives of students and mentors.

All councilors come together to form a governing body within the society, called the National Council. In addition to serving their local zone, councilors represent their zone at SPS National Council meetings and within National Council committees, which focus on specific topics within the community. You can read more about specific duties and responsibilities here. Serving as an AZC or ZC is an excellent opportunity to gain leadership experience at the regional and national levels and network with leaders within the field. To quote former councilor Amandeep Gill, “Being an AZC helped me see other paths available to me… I was able to be a committee co-chair and learned organizational skills which I have carried to my current position.”

Nominations are accepted through February 15, 2017. Associate Zone Councilors must be student members of SPS and serve for one year terms. Zone Councilors are elected for three-year terms and are often, though not always, SPS chapter advisors. Elections will be held later this Spring. Running for a leadership position is an opportunity to give back and make a difference within our community. You may nominate yourself or a colleague/friend, but it’s a good idea to make sure you gain their permission first. Serving as an AZC or ZC is an excellent service opportunity. We also manage to have a lot of fun in the process.

Consider stepping up to lead the organization for undergraduate physics and astronomy students!

Submit a Nomination!
