Dear SPS member,

I hope the start of September is the beginning of a great month for you. As you know, Sigma Pi Sigma sponsors a quadrennial congress which has grown into the largest single meeting of undergraduate physics and astronomy students. This conference is not your average event as it focuses on student interests and professional/community development. As such, I wanted to encourage you to attend the 2016 Quadrennial Physics Congress (PhysCon) in San Francisco, CA from Nov 3rd-5th. PhysCon features workshops focused on entrepreneurship, careers, and much more. Tours of Google, SLAC, and NASA Ames are available. We also have a fantastic list of speakers, including:

  • Nobel Prize winner Eric Cornell
  • Jocelyn Bell Burnell
  • Persis Drell
  • S. James Gates
  • Neil Turok
  • Patrick Brady

You will have an opportunity to present your science as either art or a poster! These can be on your research, outreach, or any other appropriate endeavor. We are expecting over 1100 undergraduates to attend and it only happens every 4 years!

The sessions focus on the connection between innovation and science and how each can drive the other forward. Thus, our theme is Unifying Fields: Science Driving Innovation. PhysCon will focus on how each of us can reshape our world through science and determination. Registration is now open.

Please register! Early registration closes on September 30th and we have a limited number of student financial awards available.

SPS Travel Awards of $200 are available to help students present their poster at PhysCon 2016. $5000 in awards will be given to poster presenters. Apply here by Sept. 15th.

Group Travel Awards: California Dreaming – Congress roadtrip! SPS is offering regional travel support up to $500 for student groups traveling via ground vehicles to attend PhysCon 2016. Apply here by Oct. 1st!

SPS Reporter Awards of $600 are available to groups of students who want to report on PhysCon. Groups will write articles that highlight aspects of the meeting and often these articles get published. Read more!

Full Travel Awards (registration, travel, and lodging) are available for students attending minority-serving institutions (MSIs) and historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) to attend PhysCon 2016. Awards include registration, travel, and lodging and are due by Sept 15th. Read more!
