SPS News Issue 184: September 29, 2020

Host a Virtual Outreach Event!

The academic year is facing unprecedented challenges but you and your SPS chapter can still make a difference. It is more important now than ever before to get the public involved and excited about science! Try to adapt your outreach events to incorporate social distancing or become completely virtual – host a virtual demo show, bring in virtual speakers, and be creative!  Apply for an SPS Fall Award to help bring your idea to life.

2020-21 SOCK Now Available

The 2020-21 Science Outreach Catalyst Kit (SOCK) is done in conjunction with the American Acoustical Society (ASA) and explores the physics of... acoustics! This FREE outreach kit will focus on how we can visualize sound in real time, appreciate the sounds that we make as people, and look to examine the soundscapes around us! These demos can be used with students K-12. Learn more information about the 2020-21 SOCK and how to apply to receive yours for free here.

Mark your calendars for November 18, 2020 for the next International LGBTQ+ STEM Day! LGBTQ+ STEM Day is a day to support and improve visibility of LGBTQ+ scientists. The Pride in STEM’s website quotes, “…there are lots of ways you can take part—from a single social media post on #LGBTSTEMDay, to attending or organising a local event.” For resources and to read more about the event, check out their website here!

Update Your Chapters Contact Information

Changes to the academic calendar and transitions to online and remote learning have disrupted many chapter election processes. You can now update your chapter contact information throughout the year if your leadership changes! Please update your chapter’s contact information  here.

Upcoming Zone Meetings

Zone meetings bring together students from SPS chapters within geographical zones. They are a fun and effective way for undergraduates to meet other students, present their research, and interact with practicing scientists. Zone meetings in 2020 may look a little different, but they will still be happening!

Scheduled Zone Meetings:

  • Zone 1: October 24,2020 (pre-meeting movie night October 23)
  •  Zone 3: October 3, 2020
  • Zone 4: October 24, 2020
  • Zone 5: October 24, 2020
  • Zone 8: November 7, 2020
  • Zone 10: November 11 and 12, 2020
  • Zone 17: November 13, 2020

As more zone meetings are scheduled, they will be posted on the SPS website here , as well as on the online calendar.  Please  contact your ZC and AZC  for more information.

Many departments have modified their standardized testing requirements this year in response to disruptions caused by Covid-19. Check out updated application requirements at
