Less than 2 Weeks Left to Apply to the SPS Summer Internship!

Apply your physics and astronomy skills to science policy, outreach, education, and research – Applications for the SPS Summer Internship Program are open! Students are placed at organizations, such as AAPT, NIST, APS, STSci, Capitol Hill, and more. If you're interested in past intern experiences, check out their blogs and final presentations!

Applications, including advisor signoffs and recommendation letters, are due Tuesday, January 16, 2024. Please contact sps-programs@aip.org with any questions.

 
 

SPS Spring Awards are now Open!

Interested in applying for scholarships or nominating your SPS advisor for the Outstanding Chapter Advisor award? Be sure to get your applications in by March 15, 2024, to be considered.

SPS-Google Scholarship – NEW!

  • Up to five $10,000 scholarships may be awarded
  • For undergraduate students with the potential and intention for continued scholastic success who are in financial need. Particular consideration is given to students in their third year of undergraduate studies who may have overcome significant obstacles in their professional journey. This scholarship is supported by Google.

Jocelyn Bell Burnell and SPS Leadership Scholarships

  • Awarded to undergraduate physics students based on scholarship, SPS/club participation, and additional criteria specific to each scholarship
  • Multiple scholarships available for $2000-$6000

SPS Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Research

  • Provided to students based on exceptional research achievement in any physics-related field
  • Up to $2,000 provided for travel/registration to attend one AIP member society meeting and a $500 honorarium for the student and $500 for the SPS chapter

SPS Outstanding Chapter Advisor Award

  • Awarded based on leadership, student leadership development, support, and encouragement the advisor has provided to the chapter; Must have received an Outstanding Chapter Award within the past two years
  • Awarded $6000 divided between the recipient, SPS chapter, and department

NEW! Sigma Pi Sigma Leadership Scholarship

  • $2,500-$3,000 awards for students in Sigma Pi Sigma
  • Awarded based on upholding its four pillars (Honor, Encouragement, Service, and Fellowship), and exhibition of the potential and intention for continued scholarship in physics, astronomy, or a closely related field
  • Preference for current undergraduates, graduate students, or those inducted into Sigma Pi Sigma within the past 10 years

Run for SPS Council

The SPS Council is the main governing body for the Society of Physics Students and Sigma Pi Sigma. The council composition was designed carefully with the student voice in mind. Be the voice of your region and help students across the globe! Nominations are being accepted for the following positions on the SPS Council (you can self-nominate):

  • SPS Zone Councilors for Zones 8, 10, 15, 16, 18, 11 (three-year terms)
  • Associate Zone Councilors for all 18 Zones (one-year terms)
  • Sigma Pi Sigma President (two-year term)

Submit Your Research to JURPA

The Journal of Undergraduate Research in Physics and Astronomy (JURPA) is an annual peer-reviewed publication of SPS which publicly disseminates the research of our undergraduate SPS members. Papers in pure, applied, computational, and/or theoretical physics and astronomy are eligible for submission.  Submit your research today!

The deadline to be printed in the summer issue is March 15.

Our spring mailer will be coming out very soon! The package includes information about topics from outreach to research and everything in between. Be sure to utilize SPS resources and elevate your SPS chapter to the level of an  Outstanding Chapter!
