Dear Sigma Pi Sigma Member,
I want to welcome you, our newest member, to our community. Founded in 1921, and based on the four dimensions of Honor, Encouragement, Service, and Fellowship, you are here because you exemplify those values. Sigma Pi Sigma's mission is not completed in the induction ceremony. With the recognition of high academic and service achievement, the mission of Sigma Pi Sigma takes a longer view. Considering that, I want to inform you of the resources and opportunities available to you as a member.
Society of Physics Students Membership
As an added benefit of becoming a Sigma Pi Sigma member, you have been granted a one-year membership to the Society of Physics Students (SPS). This gives you exclusive access to the SPS Jobs site, scholarships, funding, and more. Read about the benefits of SPS membership here.
Online Communities
Your membership in Sigma Pi Sigma can provide an invaluable network of physicists, astronomers, engineers, educators, and everyone else who makes up our society. This group can enhance your networking. To keep in touch with fellow members, and hear the latest news about Sigma Pi Sigma, please consider joining the
Sigma Pi Sigma LinkedIn group.
Chapter Events
Members can attend local chapter events, as well as SPS events, as a way to share their experiences with younger members of the physics and astronomy community. This allows students to meet new people, network, and keep up on the latest trends in physics and astronomy. Stay in touch with your Sigma Pi Sigma advisor, or sign up for the
Alumni Engagement Program.
Awards
Voluntary donations from members fund annual award programs that support local chapter projects and recognize outstanding service. Contributions also support undergraduate physics and astronomy students through scholarships, outreach awards, research awards, travel awards, and internship opportunities
. Learn how you can contribute here.
PhysCon
From its beginning, the society's leaders envisioned regular gatherings. Now known as PhysCon, these gatherings bring together 1,000s of passionate individuals who are part of the physics and astronomy community
. Read about past and upcoming PhysCon events here.
Outreach Opportunities
Members can participate in Adopt-a-Physicist,
an online forum that connects high school students with physics graduates in any career field each fall. Members can also opt-in to receive notice of special events and opportunities through quarterly emails.
Federal Payscale Benefits
The US Civil Service Commission has stated that membership in a recognized national honor society (like Sigma Pi Sigma) meets one of the requirements for entrance at the GS-7 level in numerous professional and technical occupations in the Federal service. Learn more from the
OPM guidelines.
The Radiations of Sigma Pi Sigma
Radiations is the official publication of Sigma Pi Sigma and is mailed to members twice annually (also available
online).
It features relevant scientific articles, "Hidden Physicist" profiles highlighting the many different careers an education in physics and astronomy can provide and updates on notable achievements by Sigma Pi Sigma members
and chapters. Tell us your story here
for a chance to be featured!
On behalf of Sigma Pi Sigma, I am happy to welcome you to our community.
Sincerely,

Andrew M. Zeidell, Ph.D.
